marathon monday: 13 weeks

I could also title this post "why I had the worst long run ever."

But, you know, I thought I'd stick with the theme.
After "officially" being accepted into the marathon on Friday, I was super excited to get going with training. And that includes my cross training. I haven't really been doing it much for the first five weeks of training. So on Friday night, I took my first Pure Barre class at the new location in Boston.

In not so many words, it kicked my ass. It worked my muscles in ways they weren't used to. I didn't leave hurting; I actually left feeling rejuvenated and ready to tackle more training. But the next morning, my legs just weren't ready for that. I wan't in a lot of physical pain, but my gams felt very very heavy. My legs were so used to just putting one foot in front of the other, they were thrown off from the intense thigh workout Pure Barre gives. And thanks to my lack of cross training, I had my worst long run ever.
It was slow and painful to take part in. I was supposed to run those 10 miles with a friend, but it ended up not working out. And to be completely honest, I'm so glad it didn't work out. It would have been embarrassing to slug through those miles with another person (who runs significantly faster than I on a good day).

I'm proud though, that I didn't give up. I ran 10 miles. I gave it as much as I could. And I finished. I know no matter what, I'm going to try my hardest to finish the marathon. Even if it hurts, I will finish.

But here's my word of advice to those training for a marathon: cross train. Seriously. Do it. You may think you're a badass because you can run forever, but you need to cross train. And don't be an asshole like me and wait five weeks to start.

I have confidence that my body will adjust again to the Pure Barre workout and it will help me in the end. I'll just have to deal with a few more days of hobbly miles.

I'm ok with it.


  1. Great advice! I know I'm not ready to attempt a spring marathon (vaguely considering a fall race), but I need to get my balance between running days and cross training. I have never successfully (consistently and throughout) cross trained while training for a race. I'm interested to see how/if it'll effect my pace.
    Keep up the AMAZING work!

  2. I've been doing Bar Method on and off for 1.5 years and it's amazing how it still continues to challenge my muscles and pull my hips and joints in ways nothing else can.

    I got a groupon for pure barre so maybe I'll see you in class!!

  3. AH I'm dying to try Pure Barre. I think I tell myself every break from dance I get that I will yet once again that break is almost over and I still have not... #fail Excited to hear more about it though, and you will adjust!

  4. AH! the boston marathon! congrats! I am trying to qualify for it this year! training is the hardest part of anything marathon, I did marine corp without running more than a hour. such a mistake!

  5. I ran my first half in the fall, without doing any cross training. SO stupid. By the time my long runs were up to 9 miles, i was having serious pain in my knee but it was too late to really correct it. I'm running another half in june and cross training is on the top of my to-do lists. Do you have any good recs?

    1. Hey lady! I highly recommend doing a bit of strength training (so your top half looks as good as your bottom half ;)), and also yoga or pilates. The stretching REALLY helps your muscles strengthen and help protect you from injury. Feel free to email me ( if you'd like to chat more!
