thoughts on running the boston marathon in 2014

Boston Marathon 2014
Now that it's 2014, I've started to ramp up my training for the Boston Marathon. Hooray! Running! This year, though, I'm treating training a lot differently than I did last year. Last year was intense. Really intense. I held myself to the strictest of training schedules, beat myself up when things didn't go my way, and generally just burned myself out on running.

This year's a lot different. I'm getting married. I'm getting married very close to the actual date of the marathon. So while I'm running and logging my mileage, I'm also meeting with vendors, getting my dress fitted, picking out flowers, going to bridal showers + bachelorettes, and generally just stressing about that. I feel like I don't have time to stress about running.

So I'm not. I'm not going to put so much pressure on myself to do this. I know I can run a marathon. I know I will be able to cross the finish line. So I'm giving myself a break. Sure, I have a schedule, but I'm not freaking myself out over it. I'm incorporating a lot more yoga this time around, mostly because it keeps me calm and because I know it will infinitely help my body and hopefully keep me injury-free.

This year is going to be big, and I want to make sure I enjoy every moment. I'm truly excited to have the opportunity to run the Boston Marathon. But I'm also over the moon about getting married. So here's to enjoying it all, each step of the way (be it in glitter heels or sneakers).


  1. I ran the NYC Marathon a few years back and it was SO amazing- what a thrill - running with everyone along the side lines. However...there is NO way I could run another one- it is such a commitment (training wise) and with our new little bambino- there is no way I could train! Good Luck to you! :)

  2. Here I am trying to make myself sign up for a 5k and you're running marathons and planning weddings at the same time. Awesome!

    As someone who has both run a marathon and gotten married (but not at the same time, you crazy girl!), I have a bit of advice: The month before the wedding is INSANE. For every item you check off your to-do list, another 3 pop up. This will also be your peak training time (based on my internet stalking of your wedding date). Just make sure you get your long runs in. It'll be good for you to take a break, and you can enlist Craig if there's a critical task that needs to be handled. Good luck!!!

  4. IT'S SUCH A GOOD YEAR FOR YOU. You will [obviously] do them both and I know you'll soak up every wonderful detail. Plus you've got Craig to help with any nitpicky wedding deets that come up in the crunch time of training :)

  5. You should be so proud of yourself! Let the running be a fun distraction and not an additional stressor. Meanwhile, you'll be in kick ass shape come your wedding day. :)

  6. Oh my gosh. This year is going to be MAJOR. I'm so excited for you! And i love that you're going to take it as it comes. That's kind of my philosophy with training. Do my best, but don't beat myself up over it. Booyah 2014!

  7. Yeah, girl! Enjoy it all -- I'm sure a marathon and a wedding are kind of similar in that you can kind of ruin 'em if you let the preparation phase get too stressful. You've got the right attitude. :)

  8. yay :) i think the fact that you did it last year is a great confidence booster and allows you to approach without as much stress. so excited for all the good stuff coming your way!
